Br David Hodges - Monk & Poet

Caldey Island

Battered by wind

and battered by sea

only a fool would visit,

or make plans,

on an island

where the boats

are all “Weather Permitting”.

No good to man

nor beast,

fit only for monks

and for prayer,

when the wind

is gale force

east-south-east.

Only a saint

would visit

in winter.

Brother David’s poetry reflects the monastic life of prayer in an island setting. Seascapes, the island flora and fauna, the flight of birds, liturgy, memoir and contemporary issues all provide material for the poet’s pen.
