Staying on the island
Retreat Accommodation on Caldey
St Philomena's is a retreat house for organised groups and individuals (children must always be accompanied and supervised by an adult) wishing to spend a few days of quiet and reflection, particularly those who would like to attend some of the monastic services and experience more fully the spiritual life of the island.
The accommodation is full board and vegetarian. Guests are expected to help with washing-up after meals. The house is usually open from Easter to October. Payment for the accommodation is by realistic donation, with a suggested figure of £50 per room per night to cover essential running costs. A non-refundable deposit of £50 p.p. is required on confirmation of a booking. When seeking to make a booking, especially for groups, please suggest dates but be aware that, due to availability, alternatives may likely be offered. The booking process opens up in January each year and vacancies are usually filled rapidly. We regret no pets are allowed, regardless of size or good behaviour.
Travel to & from the island for guests is strictly by designated boat only: -[Arrivals] you may only use the last boat of the day from Tenby. Please arrive at the harbour before 2pm and enquire of the boatmen at the harbour hut/tractor as to the exact time of that boat, as it will vary from day to day. -[Departures] you must leave on the first boat off the island that day (e.g. the early mail boat).
To make a booking, please either write (including a stamped addressed envelope) to The Wardens, Serena and Lloyd Tomlins, c/o St.Philomenas, Caldey Island, SA70 7UJ or alternatively e-mail them at firstname.lastname@example.org. There are a small number of rooms available in the Monastic Guesthouse for men interested in making a retreat for a few days up to one week, worshipping with the monks, eating with them in their Refectory and assisting with various daily tasks, such as cleaning and gardening. Payment for the accommodation is by donation.
